Emergence is a modern, ancestral-folk musical collective comprised of Hanna Elise and Cody Wicks, along with other part-time members and special guests as they emerge. With singer-songwriter roots and classical technique, Hanna’s vocals soar with clarity and beauty over Cody’s intricate and textured rhythms. Through written songs and skillful improvisation, Emergence offers prayers for unity and peacemaking with all sentient beings and our Mother Earth. Reaching back and below to the stories and songs from the Celtic and mixed-European cultural traditions of our lineages for guidance, Emergence’s music invites the old ways to court the new.

Meet The Band

A singer since birth, Hanna believes that it is everyone’s birthright to connect with and express authentically with their voice! During her youth, Hanna dedicated many years to studying classical voice technique and performing as a singer, dancer and actor throughout Vancouver Island, Ontario, and the land of Hulq’umi’num speaking peoples, or the Cowichan Valley, where she is from. From 2015-2016, Hanna attended the Victoria Conservatory of Music in the Diploma in Music Performance Program, specializing in Classical Voice/Opera and Contemporary Voice. She continued her studies in Montréal at Concordia University with her BA in Communication Studies, where she focussed on sound production. Since then, Hanna has written, composed and co-produced a self-released album, and consistently performs with her shared musical project, Emergence, and as a solo singer/songwriter. Her teaching style is grounded in healthy, gentle breath and vocal technique, as well as play, movement, and improvisation! She strives to create a safe enough environment so that students can access joy and freedom expressing themselves with their voice.

Cody is a percussionist, emergent song lead, and experience facilitator. He has been playing drums and percussion since childhood, playing alongside hundreds of musicians over the course of his life. He has always especially connected with those moments when there are amazing musicians outside of a typical show, calling through a unique song of the moment that will never be re-created. He believes in connecting with land and place wherever we are, fostering relationships with the land and stewards of the land, and creating paths towards peace and unity.

1:1 Voice Sessions

This offering is for women who feel like a beginner to creating sound and music with their voice. We will focus less on singing and what the voice sounds like, and more on feeling a sense of freedom to express through embodied sound. We will work with the modalities of breath, movement, song, play, and improvisation among others as we discover and rediscover your uniquely beautiful instrument. We may use piano, digital and/or analog drone instruments such as a shruti box, crystal bowls, and other instrument facilitators to support our embodied sound explorations.

This offering is for women who have a sense of vocal freedom and want to deepen their understanding of and expression with their voice. Vocal freedom and creative expression is foregrounded, with more attention to vocal anatomy, singing techniques and storytelling. We will explore the voice through movement, play, breath, and improvisation. Some Western music theory may be used in learning to read music notation, explore song-writing, and to support vocal improvisation with other instruments.

60 or 90 min. sessions available.

This offering is for women who feel committed to working together over a longer period of time to deepen in relationship to the voice and to create an embodied sense of vocal freedom and/or to meet certain vocal goals. If you book 4 sessions with me, you receive each session at a reduced rate.

This offering is for women who want to connect with and express their authentic voice while being held in nature. Whether you feel like a beginner at creating sound and music with your voice, or have a sense of vocal freedom and want to deepen your understanding of and expression with your voice, this offering is for you. Working together in nature not only gives us a container where you can express your voice more freely, but also an opportunity to connect with the elements and other sentient beings willing to support and enrich the work that we do together. Being in nature can also provide grounding support when exploring deeper layers that may arise in accessing and expressing your authentic voice.

Group Sessions & Song Circles

This offering is an invitation to gather and connect with other self-identified women, non-binary, trans, and gender-queer folks in circle, sound and song. We will begin with guided embodied sound explorations and/or song, and then transition into a facilitated sharing circle. To close, we will co-create and weave our voices together in sound and in song, with some instrumental support in the form of a guitar and/or shruti box.
